Amusing Animal Anecdotes

I remember when I bought my first guinea pig, Cocoa.  I didn't know much about the guinea pigs at the time, specifically their biology and reproduction, etc.  Well, almost two months to the day I bought her, I was woken up on August 24, 1995 at 5 a.m. by a lot of scurrying and squealing.  I get up in alarm, thinking something's wrong.  Next thing I know there's this little wet, golden lump laying next to her.  It turned out that Cocoa had popped a piggie.  I had no inkling that she was pregnant when I bought her.  And being it was almost two months to the day I'd bought her, Cocoa couldn't have conceived not more than a few days before I bought her.  It was a little boy, a golden abyssinian.  Sadly, Elvis has left the building, but he was a cutie.  :-)

One time I bought a second guinea pig, Misty, to keep Cocoa company after I'd given Elvis (Cocoa's baby boy) away to a neighbor's daughter.  They always seemed a tight-knit little pair, always getting along.  Those I'd have to say were my two best guinea pigs, Misty being my favorite of all of them.  When I took them outside, Misty was the type of piggie to always run back up to me and crawl and burrow in my lap.  And when she was in her cage with Cocoa, she would always perch up on the side of the cage and let me scratch her under the chin.  She would just sit there for minutes while I did that.  She's the piggie decorating the background on this board.

Just a little note about Sienna, my dutch satin guinea pig.  I only knew her a week before she died, but in that short time I learned what a special little fuzzball she was.  Most touching was the way Misty immediately sidled up to her and began nuzzling her in a "motherly" way.

I laughed at the reaction Josie and Kiah had when I brought Micki and Mariah (pictures forthcoming) home.  I'd bought Mariah the day before I got Micki at a pet store.  When I first stuck Mariah in there, she just sort of huddled in the corner while Josie and Kiah went scurrying around in confusion.  They'd never seen any other piggies for a few years besides themselves.  Josie got so agitated that she hopped up on top of the feeder bin to get away from the stranger.  :-)  They settled down after about 15 minutes, and Mariah even seemed to "adopt" Josie as her new mother.  Micki took an inkling to Kiah, and they all exhibited the aforementioned "motherly" behavior toward the newbies.  *G*
